In Jesus’ church, there are no denominations. Jesus’ church is simpler than the complex collection of differing manmade Christian organizations. Jesus’ church is the family of Spirit-filled believers.
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:19-22)

Agreed. I believe the surface divisions do matter, but I also believe the church is as unified as ever so long as their is one Lord and Spirit. The institutions called church are divided yet those who love God are not.

That question gets to the heart of it, I believe. And the heart of denominations is our prideful human nature. We are all pride-filled creatures, and sometimes that pride drives people to customize the truth of God, adding personal touches. And viola, you end up with a collection of varied denominations. I’m sure it’s all much more complicated that than, but I believe it all boils down to pride and ego. There’s no one to blame – it’s just who we are as humans. But thankfully, the Holy Spirit can cut through all that junk.

I am a member of a Baptist church, and a attend a nondenominational church. I’ve also visited an Apostolic church before. Out of the three, I would have to say that I feel God’s presence more in the nondenominational church that stands firmly on God’s love– not man made beliefs that only cause division. I was so offended when an Apostolic pastor said that every other denomination is going to hell, but it made me realize that my own church probably has the same idea. I don’t see how we can truly love if we’re so divided. Also, if we all believe in the same God, what need is there for all the separation?

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. I have heard of other churches that claim that all other denominations will go to hell. The sad part is, messages like these end up pushing lots of people away from Christianity. Wounded Christians are suffering from false messages.
